If you're getting into cybersecurity and wondering whether to start with TryHackMe or HackTheBox, this guide is for you. I've used both platforms for CTFs and skill building — here's my honest take as a CS freshman at Michigan Tech.

TryHackMe: Best for Beginners

TryHackMe holds your hand in the best way possible. Rooms walk you through concepts step by step, and the browser-based attack box means you don't even need to set up a local VM to get started.

What I liked

Pre-Security and Jr Penetration Tester paths are excellent
In-browser terminal — no setup required
Hints available when you're stuck
Active Discord community

What I didn't like

Some rooms feel too guided — you're not really "hacking"
Free tier has room limits

HackTheBox: Best Once You Have Basics

HTB is where you go once TryHackMe has given you the foundations. Machines are realistic, challenging, and much closer to real pentest scenarios.

What I liked

Much more realistic challenges
Pro Labs are excellent for OSCP prep
Strong community writeups after you solve it

What I didn't like

Steep learning curve for total beginners
Starting Point machines are limited on free tier

My Recommendation

Start with TryHackMe for your first 2-3 months. Complete the Pre-Security path and Jr Penetration Tester path. Then move to HackTheBox once you're comfortable with basic enumeration and exploitation concepts.

This combo is the most efficient path to landing your first cybersecurity job or passing OSCP.
